Hope constitution is ready soon, Karan Singh to Koirala

Kathmandu, Feb 16 (IANS): Indian parliamentarian Karan Singh Sunday called on Nepal President Ram Baran Yadav and newly elected Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, and hoped that the constitution drafting process is completed soon in the Himalayan nation.

The Rajya Sabha member called on the Nepali leaders at their respective offices and conveyed to them a message of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the new political scene in Nepal.

Congratulating Koirala, Karan Singh hailed the role played by him and said his election has come as a ray of hope for the Nepali people.

"I congratulate you for all the success to draft a new constitution under your wise leadership and I also hope that the remaining task of the constitution drafting process would be completed soon," a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office quoted Karan Singh as saying.

Karan Singh also hailed the successful elections to the Constituent Assembly.

"India is happy over the successful elections" and wants to see a democratic, stable, peaceful and prosperous Nepal and, as always, stands by the people of Nepal, said the statement.

Koirala told the visiting Indian leader that he was committed to coming up with a new democratic constitution within a year and sought India's moral support for the process.

He also requested Karan Singh to convey his thanks to Indian leaders for their support to Nepal on every issue.

Karan Singh also called on Yadav who told the visiting leader that India's best wishes were behind the successful Constituent Assembly elections.

"Political parties are busy drafting a new constitution and it is hoped that they will succeed in doing so," Rajendra Dahal, press adviser to the president, told IANS quoting the conversation between Yadav and Karan Singh.

Karan Singh later attended a lunch organised by Rashtriya Prajatantra Party president Pashupati Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana.

Nepali Congress leader Sher Bahadur Deuba, vice president Ram Chandra Poudel, United Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda', and former Maoist prime minister Baburam Bhattarai were present at the luncheon.

On Saturday, Constituent Assembly Chairman Surya Bahadur Thapa unveiled two books by Karan Singh - "My Story" and "Meetings with Remarkable Women".
