New Delhi, Feb 18 (IANS): Here are some key facts about Telangana, which is on way to become 29th state in the country with the Lok Sabha Tuesday passing the bill for bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

** Telangana, meaning "land of Telugus", was part of the erstwhile princely state of Hyderabad.

** Hyderabad State became part of India in 1948 after an operation by the Indian Army. Telangana became a state of Telugu-speaking people and was known as Hyderabad State till 1956 when it was merged with Andhra State, carved out of Madras province, to form Andhra Pradesh.

** Number of districts in Telangana: 10 -- Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Medak, Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar, Warangal, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Adilabad and Khammam.

** Geography: Will border coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema (parts of the existing Andhra Pradesh), Karnataka, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh.

** Area: 1.14 lakh sq. km, which will make it the 12th largest state in the country.

** With about 35.28 million population, Telangana will also be the 12th most populous state. The residuary state of Andhra Pradesh comprising Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra (Seemandhra) will have population of 49.32 million and an area of1.60 lakh sq. km

** Languages spoken: Telugu and Urdu

** The region situated at a high altitude in an upland area. Two major rivers Godavari and Krishna flow through the region but most of the land is arid.

** The region sends 119 members to the 294-member Andhra Pradesh assembly and also accounts for 17 of 42 Lok Sabha seats from Andhra Pradesh.

** Telangana contributes 60 percent of revenues of existing Andhra Pradesh. Majority of revenue comes from Hyderabad, which emerged as a key IT hub in the country during last 15 years.
