What can common man expect if PM's killers go free: Rahul

Amethi, Feb 19 (IANS): Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi Wednesday said he wondered how a common man can hope for justice, if the conspirators behind a prime minister's assassination are set free.

Gandhi was reacting to a query on the Tamil Nadu government's decision to release within three days three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

In his parliamentary constituency Amethi on a one-day visit, an emotional Gandhi told a gathering that even a prime minister does not get justice in this country.

"The prime minister gave up his life... (but the) prime minister does not get justice," he said.

The Congress leader told residents and party supporters that with regards to the fate of the three convicts, he neither felt angry nor sad.

"By being sad or angry, my father, who was also very close to you all, will not come back," he said.

He, however, said that he was left thinking that if such a thing can happen to the killers of a former prime minister, how can a common man hope for any justice.

Gandhi also said that personally he was against capital punishment, but this issue concerned the country.

"My father will not come back but it is a national matter, not one of my family or my father.

"If someone kills the prime minister and he is released, how will the common man get justice?

"This is a question that needs to be looked into. There is a need to change Hindustan," he said.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Wednesday announced that six men and a woman - both Indians and Sri Lankans - convicted in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case are to be freed.

All seven have been in prison since 1991, the year a woman Tamil Tiger suicide bomber blew herself up killing Rajiv Gandhi at an election rally near Chennai.

Jayalalita was one of the culprits in Rajiv Gandhi killings. She was supposed to be with Rajiv Gandhi on that election rally escaped knowingly without participating on it. Again, what is mercy petition is it required parliamentary approval to the President to act. Weak law. Rahul is speaking about women empowerment always, instead speaking, existing law enforcement.Really, this is the matter of a nation not a matter of one family.

Every riots are condemnable and rioters must be punished with hanging. However, 1984 sikh riots were not something orchestrated for electoral gains. The same could have been told of 2002 Godhra, if and let me repeat if, Modi has not paraded the victims on a march from Godhra to Ahmedabad, after the horrific incident. People believe Tytler was involved, people also believe Modi too was involved. The law goes by evidence, there is no evidence against both. So, either accept both are not accused or both are accused.

looks so sensitive. election is ahead. Mr. Rajiv Gandhi was killed during the election campaign in Tamil Nadu. This also Miss Jayalilitha may be involved with some conspiracy behind it? who knows.Home minister should take a note of it. When the person come into political power he loose the taste of humanity. When it concern about the power he forget his wife, children and relative to secure his place. There are so many incidents in front of us. that's why it is called dirty game. Good and honest people have very difficult to survive in midst of them. So they too have to adjust themselves according to the tune. Let us wait and see.

Jayalalitha is trying to get the maximum votes for her party in the general elections.
At the least, she and her state govt. should not have interfered in this case as it was involving the killing of an Ex-PM.
Slowly it comes down to a point where regional parties are now calling the shots. Its time that India has a two party or maximum three party policy for contesting general elections instead of allowing various regional parties.

It is very sad that innocent lives were lost, but the killers of the late former PM Rajiv Gandhi were tried for this crime and should have been given a life sentence and should not be set free. No one has the right to take a life regardless of one's status or religious beliefs. All victims deserve justice. May their souls Rest In Peace. I feel that people go to pray in a Church, Temple, Mosque or other places of worship, they are sacred and no Arms must be placed in them. I for one pray daily for World Peace and everyone keep safe, healthy and well. Have a great week-end.

I am really surprised at the statement of Rahul who says "what can common man expect if the PM's killers go free". Does congress remember the Sikh riot where common man or we call it today "AAM AADMI" were killed and till today no justice has been given to victims. At least Rajiv's killers were found and given justice. I find Rahul's comments bitter like salt.

Surprisingly Rahul is giving absurd comments to grab the vote bank. Under congress regime only PM was killed. Congress had enough time(25 years)and power to give justice. If the PM candidate is showing his inability what the common person can expect from this party.

Very sad if former PM Rajiv's killers set free!
Our rulers do not abide by the law of the land. Why the killers were languishing in Jail for so long?
By illegally releasing the killers, India is marching towards the rogue State.
    Centre is sometime becoming weak.
Trend of eliminating rivals can get encouragement, even between Jayalalitha & DMK's Karunanidhi.
    Similarly, elsewhere also.
One more gradual shift can be noticed, regional feelings are given preferance over ethics.
Quite sad for sovereign national feelings!

I have all sympathies to Rahul Gandhi. No son will tolerate the killers of his father who are convicted by the court be freed.I also do not understand the mechanism of freeing these hard core culprits by CM of a state.
Now its a open challenge to Congress party by AIDMK and unless Congress acts firmly on TN decision likely to be boomerang on the party's prospects in the next LS election.
On the other hand RG's tears/concern for his father is a mockery of his party's so far activities in favour of killers of 3000 innocent sikhs during 1984 riots in Delhi tose broke out after former PM Indira Gandhi killed by her security guards. Those killers are still wondering on Delhi streets unaffected even after 29 years of happening of th heinous crime. What about the sons/daughters/father/mother/sister/brothers of those killers sikhs?Whether RG has shown any real concern for punishing the culprits?
TNs decision to free the killers of Rajiv Gandhi is nothing but on the lines of Congress party's undisclosed policy of protecting killers of thousands of innocent sikh killers. This is my view. One feels the realpain of the pinch only when he is at the receiving end.Life lost is lost may be it is PMs or a common man. This is the law of the nature.

Funny you talk about sympathy. Any sympathy for the victims of the Gujarat riots ???? Oh, sorry, I am entering Modi territory, so no discussion on that.
Further, may I ask what were the BJP/NDA doing when they were in power at the Centre ??? How much justice did they bring to the Sikh victims ? Why did they not actively pursue cases against their own party members and RSS members who were accused in the anti-Sikh riots ???

Persons killed our young prime minister should have been hanged without any delay in the court. If the case is delayed because of court the judge responsible should have been fixed with accountability. When the murders in India are on the increase no reason to remove death sentence which should be the punishment who murders somebody.Even our judiciary is not doing well in disposal of cases because there is no time limit to dispose the cases. The effective judiciary cannot expect effective law and order.Thanq.

Congress made alliance with dmk earlier who were sympathizers of LTTE..BJP made alliance with viko the leader of MDMK...who said in 1991..if late exp pm come to TN, won't return back(as per memories of newspaper reports 1991)...what's happening here is not right.
