Curfew continues in Kashmir's Pulwama, situation peaceful

Srinagar, Feb 21 (IANS): Curfew continued Friday in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama town where clashes had erupted between people and the security forces Thursday following the killing of a man alleged to be a Hizbul Mujahideen guerrilla. The situation was peaceful bar one incident.

Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, in full riot gear, were deployed in Pulwama town, 30 km from Srinagar, to enforce the curfew.

Security forces disallowed all pedestrian and vehicular movement in Pulwama town, while in other towns of the district, shops, other businesses and transport remained closed.

Stone-pelting youth clashed with police in Pakharpora village after the Friday prayers. Police dispersed the protesters and the situation quickly returned to normal in the village, another police officer said.

Police said no untoward incident occurred anywhere else in the town or the adjacent villages.

Clashes had erupted in the town Thursday following the killing of a Hizbul guerrilla, a resident of Prichoo village in the district, by the security forces Wednesday.
