Woman from Karnataka rescued in Delhi, one arrested

New Delhi, Feb 24 (PTI): A 21-year-old woman from Karnataka was rescued from South Delhi's Mahipalpur area in a joint operation of Delhi and Karnataka Police after the man she had eloped allegedly made ransom calls to her father demanding Rs 10 lakh.

Sujoydey (27), a resident of 24 Pargana district of West Bengal, was arrested yesterday from Mahipalpur by the joint team and the girl was rescued.

"A team of Karnataka Police arrived in Delhi yesterday and sought assistance from us for recovery of a girl kidnapped for ransom from Bagal Kot district of Karnataka. The person, who made ransom call of Rs 10 lakh to the parents of the girl, was located in the area of Mahipalpur," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.

Crime Branch officials along with Karnataka Police team reached the area and conducted raids at many places. Sustained efforts put in by the police team bore fruits and the kidnapped girl was rescued safely and accused Sujoydey was apprehended, police said.

According to the girl, about 6-7 months ago, she had received a missed call on her cell phone and when she called back, Sujoydey introduced himself to her as a businessman and they became friends. They started talking over phone frequently and after some time developed affection towards one another.

"Meanwhile, her family was looking for a suitable groom for her and arranged her marriage to be solemnised in the month of April. Sujoydey then convinced her to elope with him after stealing cash and jewellery from her house," said Yadav.

On February 20, Sujoydey reached Bengaluru Airport and she took Rs three lakh and gold jewellery weighing around 100 gm from her home and reached Bengaluru. On the same day, they boarded a flight and reached Delhi. Sujoydey then took her to a guest house in Mahipalpur where they stayed for the night.

According to police, Sujoydey did not have enough money to sustain her after marriage. So, he made a ransom call to her father without her knowledge and demanded Rs 10 lakh. The father then approached police which registered a case and Sujoydey was apprehended from Delhi.

Sujoydey worked with his father who runs a small unit of manufacturing T-shirts. He has studied up to 12th standard. The girl had been studying in 2nd year of Arts in the local college. She has two brothers and two sisters and her father is a vegetable vendor, police said. Karnataka Police is also looking into the human trafficking aspect in the case.

Why only man is arrested!!! Arrest that woman also. She is equally involved in the crime by stealing from her own house.
Why there is always a soft corner against woman? Even though they are wrong!!!

    @ R. Fernandes, Dubai,
If there is any official complaint by parents against their daughter, the police could have arrested her.

Fernandes, you are right, it is not necessary for the police to receive a complaint to arrest/take action against a person. If there is sufficient prima facie evidence of wrongdoing or of breaking the law the police are empowered to take action suo moto. I believe this is what happened in the Tejpal case.

    Dear Fernandes,

Ladies are not wrong, but they are emotional fools and they are sensitive creation of God. They are like candles so they melt fast. If they love they will love blindly and without hesitation they will sacrifice everything for the sake of love. Some cases happening in the limelight and disclosing everything and some ladies are not disclosing this incident to protect the family prestige..If we find ladies alone or helpless, instead of helping her with humanity, many people are misusing her!! This is reality and this is a male dominated society and people have believed, what male admits to the society and they will get all types of support from their own family also and such parents are very unlucky to have such type of children who spoils society and humanity. In this world, everyone is not blessed with everything but some families are going through hardship of life and this trial is for us not for that poor family. Because Almighty God wanted to test us because when we met such people how we will react or what step we will take to encourage them or support them? But what today we are doing and where we are stepping into?? Ask yourself if you get the answer in lifetime, please remember those humble ladies true love and agony!!

I think you are referring to your community.
Girls in remaining communities have gone much ahead than your thought process.
You are still in the stone age.

I admire your point of view.
In this case she blindly believed her, without knowing his other character.

Here clearly mentioned "Sujoydey did not have enough money to sustain her after marriage. So, he made a ransom call to her father without her knowledge and demanded Rs 10 lakh."

Trust is very important part of life, but she lost, now she realizes and also she understands the value of parents love and care.

That makes India great, at least locally. Our police can trace the callers within a short time, which is difficult even to American cops!
