New Delhi, Feb 26 (IANS): To encourage next generation innovators and promote creativity, a National Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) acceleration programme was launched at the National Science Museum here Wednesday.
The programme focuses on initiatives aimed towards promoting creativity, innovation and do-it-yourself attitude among students through an array of hands-on activities.
Launched by Intel India, it intends to accelerate and strengthen STEM education in India.
"The programme will provide a wide array of STEM-centered initiatives and resources, designed to inspire innovative spirit among students and result in better learning and great discovery," said G.S. Rautela, director general, National Council of Science Museums (NCSM).
Rautela urged students to ask more questions and seek "innovative" answers.
"The real excitement lies in asking questions, instead of answering them. When you have a problem, scratch your head for answers and come out with unique answers," he told students at the event.
As part of the programme, Intel India signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the NCSM to strengthen the research culture and build innovation resources.
Under the memorandum, various initiatives like the 'Galileo Corner' at select NCSM innovation centres and a 'science week' focused on STEM-related activities are planned.
"The Galileo Corner allows children to play around, experiment and unleash their talent," said Anjan Ghosh, regional director of Intel, corporate affairs, Asia-Pacific.
"We believe that young minds are the key to taking on big ideas, and a strong STEM foundation is crucial for their success. Our partnership will build a strong innovation capability across India," he added.
Suraj Kumar, a class eight student of a Kendriya Vidyalaya in Delhi, expressed enthusiasm at the setting up of the Galileo Corner.
"I love science, especially chemistry. Such centres are essential to foster innovation and creativity among children. I am glad such a centre is being launched," Kumar told IANS.
