Four killed in boat accident near India-Nepal border

Kathmandu, March 2 (IANS): At least four people were killed and 14 went missing when a boat capsized in a river near the India-Nepal border Saturday night.

According to police, the ill-fated boat capsized around 7.30 p.m. Saturday in the Mohona river in Kailali district.

The people were returning after shopping from a nearby Indian town of Tikunia in Uttar Pradesh.

There were over 20 people on board when the boat went down.

Four bodies were found in a rescue operation launched by India's border guarding force Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the Nepal police, according to police inspector Lal Bahadir Saud.

Four people were also rescued by the SSB.

According to police, the over-crowded boat might have capsized due to rise in water level caused by the rainfall.

In the absence of a bridge over the river, Nepali people often cross over to Tikunia in boats for shopping, meeting their daily needs, and other chores.
