Chinese leaders pay silent tribute to Kunming attack victims

Beijing, March 3 (IANS): Chinese leaders and political advisors Monday paid silent tribute to the victims of the terrorist attack in the city of Kunming at the opening of the annual session of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

"The violent terrorist attack in Kunming March 1 has caused great losses to people's lives and property," Xinhua quoted Du Qinglin, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, as saying.

Du condemned the terrorists behind the attack and conveyed condolences to the families of the victims.

"The CPPCC supports the law enforcement departments to crack down on all violent, terrorist and criminal activities in accordance with law," he said.

A group of knife-wielding attackers slashed people at Kunming railway station in China's southwestern province of Yunnan Saturday, killing 29 people and injuring 143.
