15 killed in Afghan suicide bomb attack


Kabul, March 18 (IANS): At least 15 people were killed and 20 others injured in a suicide bomb attack Tuesday in Afghanistan, police said.

The attack took place at the main intersection of Maimana, the capital of northern Afghan province of Faryab, Tuesday morning.

Troops immediately cordoned off the area shortly after the blast. Police and rescue teams also reached the site.

"In the cowardly terrorist attack in Maimana city this morning, 15 innocent civilians lost their lives and 20 sustained injuries," Provincial Governor Mohammad Allah Baktash told Xinhua.

The explosion damaged several shops and vehicles near the site of the blast, the governor confirmed.

The suicide bombing happened amid preparations in the town to celebrate Nawroz, Afghan New Year, Friday.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
