Slovaks vote in second round of presidential poll


Bratislava, March 29 (IANS): The second round of Slovakia's presidential election kicked off Saturday.

The voters will choose their new president from Prime Minister Robert Fico and philanthropist, businessman and political newcomer Andrej Kiska, Xinhua reported.

Polling started at 7 a.m and will remain open till 10 p.m., an official said.

The results of the run-off will be published by the Central Electoral Committee.

None of the 14 candidates gained over 50 percent of the votes during the first round March 15, as required by the constitution.

Fico came first in the polls, gaining 531,919 votes, or 28 percent, while Kiska gained 455,996 votes, or 24 percent.

The winner of the presidential election will take office June 15.

The presidential term lasts five years, and the same person can only be re-elected once, according to Slovakian Constitution.

This is the fourth presidential election in Slovakia's history. President Ivan Gasparovic won in 2004 and was re-elected in 2009.
