Six policemen killed in Afghanistan suicide attack

Kabul, April 2 (IANS): At least six policemen were killed Wednesday in a suicide bomb attack at the country's interior ministry office, the ministry confirmed in a statement.

"One suicide bomber wearing military uniform tried to enter alongside visitors to the ministry of interior building at around 2.30 p.m. (local time),” Xinhua quoted the ministry as saying in the statement.

“The attacker detonated his explosive jacket at the entrance after being identified. Six Afghan National Police (ANP) were martyred as a result of the blast," it added.

The suicide bomber was also killed on the spot.

The brief statement did not disclose if any person sustained injuries in the attack which took place in central Kabul. It is said that several people were lined up for access when the blast occurred. Earlier reports said at least four people sustained injuries.

The incident comes as the country is preparing for the presidential and provincial councils elections slated for Saturday.

The Taliban insurgent group fighting the government has vowed to disrupt the election process.

More than 20 million eligible Afghans will vote for the new president and new provincial assembly members for the next five years, according to the Independent Election Commission (IEC) officials.
