US cop arrested at Delhi airport for carrying bullets in luggage

New Delhi, Apr 5 (PTI) : A New York Police Department officer has been arrested and charged here under Arms Act after three bullets were found in his luggage, police said on Friday. It was reported that the officer

Manny Encarnacion, 49, was arrested in New Delhi on March 11 after he arrived on a Lufthansa Airlines flight from New York, Deputy Commissioner of Police Airport Security M I Haider said.

"Three 9mm bullets were found in his baggage. He was booked under Arms Act," Haider said.

Encarnacion was produced in court the very same day and was granted bail, police said.

US Embassy officials had visited Encarnacion to assist him.

He has been barred from leaving the country and is due to appear in court on April 17.

Encarnacion accidentally left the bullets in his bag when he was visiting India to meet his newly-wed wife Vida, an Iranian student, a report in the New York Post said.

Meanwhile, the New York Mayor Bill de Blasio today said he is "troubled" by the detention of the police official and hoped that he would be treated fairly by Indian officials.

"Obviously we want to know a lot more about what's going on," he said at a law enforcement event in New York when asked about the Encarnacion's case.

"But so far, from what I'm hearing, I'm troubled by it and I want to make sure we're providing support to him and make sure he's not being treated unfairly," de Blasio added.

New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said the department is "staying very engaged with that issue in India...We are certainly concerned for that officer and for his wife who's there with him in India at this time."

"But that's a process that's moving slowly in the India justice system ? but we're staying informed," he said.

    Dear Rosario.
1st of all If this happend in US by a indian citizen then they would have been strip searched him. So why the law id different law for the US citizen , David Headly was a US citizen as well. this is the person who did the recky for 26/11, it doesn't matter 2 or 3 bullet how he got this through the US airport security , 2nd we should remember one thing if he can take in it means some one else can take in as well. it means there is a loop hole in system . lets find out where . 2nd interrogate him and find out why he was carrying . Do not show a difference law for the US citizen . Wrong people will us this against India. Pls tell the new york Mayor the law is same to every body there is no special law for the US citizen india. They treat our president and other political delegation very bad in airport remember DR ABDUL KALAM, DIFENCE MINISTER AK GEORGE FERNANDIES , lets treat them same like other people who brake the law. how is got the bail suddenly . if this happend with normal citizen of india will the govt treat like this. what a shame for our law.

Look at the fact the man accidently carried in his bags. Intention was good not to harm anyone like exploding people lives. Please let you know that many Indians are waiting in the line to enter US for better life why? if you think Indians are treated badly then why many likes to enter US, Europe, CANADA then why not they go to Afhgan, Egypt, many such places. Do you know every Indian has treated as good or better than White here.So please don't pass unwanted comments without knowing the lifestyle here where we lived this part for centuries and prospered better than White Whereas as if we have used the same talent in India we still be in the same jopat, living struggling life whereas we realy enjoy freedom, business here and democracy without any communalism, hatred, corruption. So people in the forum be wise and truthful towards other nations when you pass comments.

Indian authority do they have guts do the tests like Devayani Khobragade. No, never. Think, if the same mistake happen any Indian in America how they will react, you can just image.!!!!!. Suppose, this guy is any other … within in a minute, they will label.. whatever they wish (Indian Authority). Now, Indian authority will leave him to stay in American Embassy and provide all royal support. O.k. we will wait for real fact, because, he has a connection with Iranian (his wife). Query will disclosed.

That means if some country allows all this, can one responsible individual be so casual and carry on him bullets in such dangerous times of international terrorism?? What if the same had happened to someone who did the same mistake and got caught out there, imagine that???

Poor Manny! Look how the New York mayor is troubled by Manny's arrest in New Delhi and he hopes that Manny would be treated 'fairly' by the Indian Officials. Did the NY Police Dept treat our Divyani Khobragade 'fairly' after her arrest and inhuman treatment? Manny should not be allowed to get away easily because he is a US citizen. I am not saying that it is 'tit for tat' but we Indians crawl when asked to bow. Let Salman Khurshid take a tough stand like he did in the case of Ms. Divyani. Jai Hind.

I feel ashamed and sorry for our custom officers. Tons of illegal arms smuggled into the country.
Catch them, not 3 bullets from U.S. passenger.!!!
Of course, technically it is illegal, no doubt, but not a big deal, damn it.

You are right in saying that. But do u know what treatment an Indian would have got in US, if it had happened to an Indian there? Already there are so many instances. Illegal is illegal. Now the US officials are trying to save him saying that he accidentally left them in his baggage!! How did he pass through the immigration at the departure airport?
