NEW DELHI, jUN 15: After a tumultuous month and a half, the Mahajan family finally got some relief on Wednesday. Rahul Mahajan returned home after nine days. Soon after Rahul was let off from Tihar jail, he drove into his 7, Safdurjung home in a white Hyundai Sonata accompanied by his brother-in-law Anand Rao and four of his close friends who had flown in from Mumbai.

There was a tussle for space between media persons and family members who were waiting for Rahul to arrive. Incidentally, it was Anil, the driver who had taken him to Apollo hospital on the night of the tragedy, who drove Rahul home. Sporting his trademark white shirt, blue jeans and stubble, Rahul got off the car with folded hands. Asked if he was relieved to finally come home, he nodded firmly and moved on to reunite with his family.

As soon as Rahul saw his mother Rekha Mahajan, he touched her feet. Both mother and son embraced each other. Rekha Mahajan was not able to control her emotions. She broke down in public. The entire family consisting of Rahul's sister Poonam, uncle Gopinath Munde, Munde's daughter Pankaja and close family friend Sudhanshu Mittal huddled together and took Rahul inside the house, literally battling it out with the television crew that almost followed them inside.

"I am very tired. I just want to relax," Rahul told Gopinath Munde. "His mother had been waiting ardently and had prepared food especially for her son. For the last two-three days she was on a liquid diet and had vowed she would eat once her son comes home. It will be a special moment for both mother and son today," said Munde.

Rahul's sister told DNA, "It's been a difficult time for us. Rahul is the favourite of the family. When I informed my grandmother that he has got bail, she asked me ten times if it was true.”
