Chennai, April 22 (IANS): The Election Commission Tuesday evening imposed prohibitory orders across Tamil Nadu till the morning of April 24 when polling takes place for all the 39 Lok Sabha seats in the state, officials said.
Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar told reporters here that the prohibitory orders were from 6 p.m. Tuesday till 6 a.m. Thursday.
The prohibitory orders were issued under section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure that bans unlawful assembly of people.
"Campaigning for the general election ends today (Tuesday). We have asked the district collectors to issue necessary orders," Praveen Kumar said.
The poll panel has also ordered closure of liquor shops across the state from Tuesday till Thursday midnight.
According to the Election Commission, there are 60,817 polling stations in Tamil Nadu for the general election and also the Alandar assembly constituency by-election.
A total of 17,684 polling stations will be covered via web-streaming on polling day. Live streaming of polling will be made available for public viewing.
The Election Commission has also created a website - www.public.gelsws.in - where people can view the video streaming of polling across all the 39 constituencies.
A viewer has to register her/his name and phone number on the website. On receipt of user name and password, users can view videos of two polling stations from each parliamentary constituency.
Access to the video will be only for 10 minutes after which the user will be logged out automatically. The viewer then has to log in again.
