Mumbai: Dr V N Acharya, first Indian woman nephrologist, dies

Mumbai, May 6: The first lady of Indian nephrology, Dr V N Acharya was the first woman to take a leadership role in the development of nephrology in India. As the chief of nephrology and chair of medicine at KEM Hospital and Seth G S Medical College and then director of postgraduate studies in Neph at Nadiad, she trained thousands of students in medicine and hundreds in nephrology.
She developed the first dialysis and transplant facilities in western India and was a vigotous advocate of deceased donor kidney transplant. She was also very active in prevention of kidney diseases for which she organized various educational and screening programs through National Kidney Foundation, India.
She was the founding member of the Indian Society of Nephrology and Indian Society of Organ Transplant and served as the president of both societies. She was instrumental in bringing all the renal health care professionals together by organizing a first ever 'Conference of Renal Health Care Professionals.'
She was a great academician and had more than 250 publications in various national and international journals. For all her contributions in her field of nephrology, she received numerous awards including the Lifetime achievement award from the Indian Society of Nephrology and South Asia region pioneer award from Indian Society of Nephrology.
