Colombo, Jun 26: A Sri Lankan Army general was assassinated in a powerful bomb attack outside Colombo on Monday.

Major General Parami Kulatunga was driving along a highway when the bomb set up on a cycle exploded at Pannipitiya, a suburb of Colombo, during the morning rush hour.

Kulatunga was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead, said Dr Anil Jayasinghe, chief of the accident unit of the National Hospital.

Kulatunga's car took the full impact of the blast, police said. The general's driver and an unidentified civilian were also killed in the blast.
