Modi doesn't understand India; snoops on women: Rahul

Updated

Chandauli (UP), May 10 (PTI): Taking Narendra Modi head on, Rahul Gandhi today said the BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate does not understand the strength of India and its people and accused his party of following a politics that was "full of anger".

Also attacking him on snoopgate issue, Gandhi advised Modi to change slogans on his posters where it was promised that he would give power to women, as "he was the person sending police after women and tapping their phone in Gujarat."

Addressing a public rally here after holding a massive roadshow in Varanasi constituency earlier today, the Congress Vice President took pot-shots at Modi for his alleged links to Gujarat-based industrial house Adanis. "We (Congress) want to fulfil your dream. He (Modi) shows dream to Adani," Gandhi said, but clarified that Congress was not against industrialists.

"If the country has to move forward, then there has to be partnership between industrialists and labourers. Everybody will be part of the development, labourers, farmers and workers," he said. Gandhi said that BJP leaders' speeches were "full of anger, but India works on love and not on anger." "India is for everybody. It is for Hindus, Muslims, Sikh and Christians. It belongs to every caste and community, poor and rich people and it will remain for everybody."

On Modi, he said, "Few days back, I saw a  poster in Delhi which had Modji's image and it was written that "Mahilaon ko main shakti doonga". Me, not we, only me."

"He (Modi) comes to you and says, you have not done anything. Nothing happened in India for the last 60 years. He asks farmers, workers, what have you done. Says India was sleeping.

"The US presidents understood that India has risen. Traders, farmers, industrialists, workers have took India forward. India has risen like a tiger and Modi comes to you and says make me Chowkidar. Nothing happened in the last 60 years. Modi says he will make the difference," Gandhi said.

Continuing his diatribe against the Gujarat Chief Minister, the Congress leader said that Modi tells women that they do not have power and he would give them the power.

"He does not have understanding about India. There is no need to give strength to women of India. They have huge strength. Nobody can give strength to the country. It has strength. You have power in your hands, in your heart. Nobody will give you strength from above," Gandhi said.

The Congress Vice President said, "You (Modi) send police after woman in Gujarat, you tape phone of woman. You make their conversation listen by police and Home Ministry. You stop that. There is no need to give power. The country has power in itself. You please give this country little respect," On the other hand, he said, the Congress leaders "come to you bowing our heads. We understand your strength. We cannot tell you you have done nothing in the last 60 years. "We cannot say we will change the country. You will do it. Your power will change it.

This is the difference between them and us. They (BJP) make people fight, spread anger. We spread love and compassion."

Attacking Samajwadi Party and UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, who also held a roadshow in Varanasi today, Gandhi accused them of stalling women reservation bill.

"We want to ensure 33 per cent reservation to women in assemblies and Parliament. The parties in Uttar Pradesh have been stalling the Bill providing for the reservation. They did not allow it.

Our first job will be to ensure the reservation for women. We will open 2,000 police stations only for women. And we will recruit 25 per cent women in police," he said.

He asked the Chandauli's Congress candidate Tarun Patel to "fight for truth, fight for rights of the farmers, labourers and poor people."

He also thanked the people of Varanasi for  giving him "so much love".

Rahul's tit-for-tat campaign against Modi in Varanasi

Varanasi, May 10 (PTI): Days after Narendra Modi took on Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, the Congress Vice President today retaliated by campaigning on the last day in this temple town, where the BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate is in the fray.

Donning a Gandhi cap, the 43-year-old leader flanked by Congress candidate Ajay Rai began his roadshow in a Muslim-dominated Gol Gadda area, waving to supporters who surrounded his vehicle.

Rahul's roadshow follows a massive one conducted by Aam Aadmi Party challenger Arvind Kejriwal yesterday and another one by Modi the day before.

The roadshow is to conclude after about ten kms at Lanka near BHU gate, the same place where Kejriwal and Modi had begun their roadshows.

In his last push before campaigning ends this evening, Kejriwal was conducting another roadshow today, while SP leader and UP chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav also had one scheduled.

Leaders present in Rahul's roadshow included Ghulam Nabi Azad, Madhusudan Mistry, CP Joshi and Raj Babbar.

Congress supporters had begun assembling since early in the morning. "We are fighting to win. We are confident of our victory," said Azad who has been camping here.

Breaking an unwritten code, Modi had addressed a rally in Amethi, where Rahul has been challenged by BJP's Smriti Irani, on the last day of campaigning there on May 5 and had made a stinging attack on the Gandhi family.

The show of strength by Rahul came as campaign frenzy gripped Varanasi, which will go to polls on May 12 in the last lap of the nine-phase Lok Sabha elections.

A large posse of policemen surrounded Rahul's convoy as it moved with the flag-waving crowd in the streets of Varansi.

With the sun blazing down, Congress supporters, many of them wearing tricolour caps, shouted slogans.

Rahul's roadshow was allowed in Beniya Bagh, where Modi was refused permission by the Election Commission to hold rally due to security reasons, prompting an angry reaction from BJP.

"It is blot on the electoral process where a PM candidate has not been allowed to hold rally in his constituency. Why were security reasons cited for Modi and not for the other leaders who are campaigning there?

"It is now clear that the permission was denied due to political reasons and not for security reasons," BJP leader Arun Jaitley said.

    Hi Rizwan,

Do not be so cheap about Indian ladies... They are educated and bold.... They do not fear...

The fact is that the whole episode was done to protect her as requested by her father, who is family friend of Modi.

She is extremely professional and not given any interview to media thereby further reduced the issue to zero. It is only shameless Congress & anti Modis wanted to politicise the issue at the cost of that poor lady.

    Mangalorean,

No doubt Rahul is non-corrupt, innocent, wants to bring in changes in the system and got some 'from the book' ideas.
The problem lies in the family, the corrupt mother and brother in law duo will definitely use him as a pawn. same thing happened with economist MMS.
Even Mr. Moily had a clean image when he was karnataka CM. Now everyone knows how the Primary lady of UPA turned Moily into stinking corrupt politician.
I could have seen Rahul a strong competition to Modi at a different level IFF he was free from corrupt Sonia & Vadra.

Since 65 years this circus is going on by Gandhi's fooling the minority people and just using them as vote bank and later dumping them like crushing the sugar cane and dumping the waste after removing the juice.
