Congress wins Mizoram's lone seat

Aizawl, May 16 (IANS): Outgoing MP C.L. Ruala of Mizoram's ruling Congress party Friday won the lone Lok Sabha seat in the state.

Ruala defeated Robert Romawia Royte of the United Democratic Front (UDF) by 6,154 votes. Ruala got 210,485 votes.

The UDF is an alliance of eight parties led by the Mizo National Front, which ruled the state for two terms (1998-2003 and 2003-08).

In the by-election in the Hrangturzo assembly seat, state Youth Congress president Vanlalawmpuii Chawngthu defeated UDF candidate H. Lalduhawma by 2,503 votes.

Chawngthu, 35, became the state's first woman legislator since 1987.

The by-election was necessitated after Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, who won from two seats in November last year, vacated the seat.
