PM Manmohan Singh resigns

New Delhi, May 17 (PTI): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh resigned today, capping a 10-year tenure of two UPA governments that have been brought to an end by a shattering defeat in the Lok Sabha elections.

81-year-old Singh drove to the Rasthrapati Bhavan from his official residence 7, Race Course Road, to submit the resignation of his Council of Ministers.

"The President has accepted the resignation of Manmohan Singh and has requested him and his colleagues to continue till the new government is formed," a Rashtrapati Bhavan statement said.

The Prime Minister and Mukherjee, who had worked in Singh's Cabinet as Finance, Defence and External Affairs Minister, exchanged bouquets.

Singh handed over his resignation and the recommendation of the Cabinet for dissolution of the 15th Lok Sabha, which is just a formality.

After their brief meeting, Mukherjee, in a rare gesture, came to the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan to see off Singh. They shook hands for sometime and were seen in an intimate conversation. Singh then also took leave of the Rashtrapati Bhavan officials, including the President's Secretary Omita Paul.

Earlier this morning, the Cabinet met and recommended dissolution of the Lok Sabha.

The Cabinet adopted a resolution lauding the role of Singh.

Good bye MMS..You would be better remembered as an economist rather than a prime minister.Being a rubber stamp PM did not help your party at all.It is sad that the mother-son duo badly misused your unquestioned loyalty to them to their advantage. Anyways all the best for your retired life...

Good Bye Dr. MounMohan Singh. If you would have shown some spine and acted like a PM should act, then congress wouldn't have lost so miserably. You were a P.M of the biggest democracy in the world for gods sake. if you would have connected with people, if you would have done your duty, and if you would have asked people to come out and vote for congress they would have voted. But you chose to be a Scapegoat instead, a puppet in the hands of party president. You guys tried to frame Modi as a villain but people took him as a Hero. if you would have ignored him, he wouldn't have been so famous among masses. you guys dug your own grave. I dont want to see UPA in center for next 10 years atleast

Personally i am committed to say that Mr manmohan sings integrity was well known but the greatest mistake he made in governing india was he did not straggly taken action on scammers and scandals and corruption. Besides he aligned with corrupt politicians like lalu to stay in power. Perhaps tehe were shared decisions with Sonia but the buck stopped in PM office to uphold integrity bu MR singh failed and was a lame duck SILENT PM.

I have criticized Manmohan Singh Many times in this forum. But not that he was corrupt like other congis. Manmohan Singh's image was tarnished because of his salience when his herd was involved in massive corruption and he could not do any thing as the power center of congress was in 10 Janpath. Looking back, going through all the events, today I really feel sad for him, Sad for man of such a integrity, How congress(feku Gandhis) used him to shield their bad deeds. Daynasty family had eliminated all those congress leaders after Rajiv Gandhi who were looking to be thorn on the way for Pappu 's PMs post. As the Mom knew about Pappu's inability to run the nation 10 years back she wanted a soft toy whom she can control with A Remote, then how they made MMS the PM of India. But later went on marketing their pseudo secular credentials that they are the first to make a Sikh PM, but he whole intention was different. Infact Sonia Herself wanted to sit in that chair, but her Origin was a big problem for her as she knew the people will not accept her. They they acted the great Indian Drama of "Sonia Sacrificed PM CHAIR". Next Hurdle was Pranab Mukharji, he was removed and put to Presidents chair with the remote still at 10 Janpath. Sonias intention was clear that is the NDA dint meet simple majority, then they had a big plans of enlarged UPA with the help of the president. Thanks got this was bombed, forget PM they are not eligible for the leader of opposition also. Finally its sad that Singh had to leave such a way after devastation of Congress and the Feku Gandhi family is all bent to put the blame of this Debacle on MMS. But am sure the people of India irrespective of party, acknowledge MMS as the greatest Economist Ever, but failed to check corruption in his Govt. Good life to MMS.

    Rajesh,
it is the same case with Veerappa Moily too. He was a gentleman when he was in Karnataka politics with no major cases of corruption. He was pulled into the cabinet and made to all the wrong. The ultimate nails on the coffin were taking off Govt. control on petrol prices and record breaking approvals for all the stalled projects after replacing Jayanthi Natarajan.
I feel not sad but angry with MMS. if he couldn't stop he could always resigned and left with dignity!

One of the tallest Prime Minister of Independent India. I rate PM Manmohan Singh as the No-1 PM of India. His contribution especially to the growth of Indian economy will be remembered always. His simplicity, honesty and noble virtues have to be the role model for every PM of this country.
His silence was his greatest strength and as a result was able to rule this country for 10 long years. He will be remembered for ever.As he resigns today i express my deep sense of gratitude and bow my heads down to this great leader.Thankyou Sir.

Past ten years there was good amount
of development took place in the country. Perhaps TATA in a rare gesture acknowledged it. Recently we were clubbed to third largest economy of the world a rare feat and the credit must go to MMS and Chidu.Yes, on political ground both were incompetent for oppn parties but both statesman's integrity unquestionable. India now stands tall among world's developed countries. The honesty, integrity and non corrupt personality of MMS is highly appreciable and model to future generations to come. The scams, inevitable coalition compromise in certain issues and corruptions downgraded UPA to loose unprecedentedly.Dr Manmohan Singh, truly membered for ever in Indian history.
