BJP's win is due to party's loyal workers: Modi

New Delhi, May 17 (IANS): BJP leader Narendra Modi, who will become the next prime minister, Saturday dedicated the party's thumping victory in the Lok Sabha polls to the "generations of loyal party workers".

Modi was speaking outside the party's national headquarters in the heart of Delhi after he flew in from Gujarat in the morning to lead a roadshow and attend the BJP's parliamentary board meeting.

"This victory is dedicated to the sacrifices of generations of loyal party workers who have been working tirelessly since 1952. It's the fruit of their blessings, prayers and hard work," Modi said as the crowd showered rose petals on him and chanted his name.

Modi led his party to a stunning victory, making the BJP the first non-Congress party since Independence in 1947 to win a comfortable majority on its own in the 545-member Lok Sabha.

"I thank the people of Delhi for voting and electing all our seven candidates. The warm welcome that I have received today, I am thankful for that," added Modi.

As Modi entered the gates of the office, a bunch of white balloons was released.

Party sources said the BJP parliamentary board meeting will discuss issues like government formation, appointment of the party's new president, new chief minister for Gujarat, and the role of Advani in the new government.

Leaders like Sushma Swaraj, L.K. Advani, Arun Jaitley, Nitin Gadkari, Rajnath Singh, Venkaiah Naidu, Murli Manohar Joshi, Amit Shah, among others, are to participate in the meeting.

Earlier, Modi set out in a motorcade from Delhi airport to the party headquarters. He was given a rousing welcome by thousands of party supporters en route.

The throngs of supporters waved BJP flags, blew conches, beat drums, danced and raised slogans as soon as Modi stepped out of the airport.

The motorcade, now protected by the Special Protection Group, slowed down at several points to acknowledge the greetings of Modi fans gathered on the streets.

Modi will later Saturday evening go to Varanasi to pray at the Kashi Vishwanath temple and take part in the Ganga Aarti. He contested from Vadodara in Gujarat and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and won handsomely from both constituencies.
