Kalpana Chawla remembered on her birthday
The Kalpana Chawla Astronomy Club of Lourdes Central School here met and observed a minute's silence as a mark of respect to the great departed soul of Indian born astronaut - Kalpana Chawla.
This was done on July 1, which is her birthday. The announcement by the government to mark this day as Daughters' Day was shared with the members of the club.
Principal Grace Noronha gave a call to the girl students to keep the late Kalpana Chawla as their role model and follow her footsteps.
Community Service, an outreach programme
The Lourdes Central School, Mangalore has launched the Community Service, an outreach programme, this academic year. As a part of this, it has begun with two programmes:
1) Each One Teach One: Students of class 9, who are 26 in number, have started teaching computers to the students of St Francis Xavier Kannada Medium School, Bijai.
These classes are conducted in the computer lab of Lourdes Central School where 40 boys and girls of class VII get hands-on experience on computer.
2) Spoken English classes: The school will also conduct spoken English classes to the students of class VI of St Francis Xavier Kannada Medium School, Bijai.
These programmes have been planned with an intension of taking the underprivileged students of Kannada medium shools into the mainstream in this competitive world and to prepare them for their career.
This outreach programme would also inculcate the qualities of sharing and caring and also develop concern for others among the students of the host school.
