A newspaper report which carried a statement by one Kammappa, a quarry worker who fled form Udupi to Lingasagur led to the rescue of a family which was allegedly kept as bonded labourers in a quarry here.
The Udupi tahsildar and his team rescued a family belonging to the Lambani tribe of Lingasagur. The family was said to be under bonded labour in the Kuntalukatte quarry at Bairampalli under Udupi taluk limits.
Tahsildar K Muralidhar visited the spot recently and found Renukamma, her daughter Lakshmi alias Yamunamma (wife of Kamappa), her 15-day old infant and her brother Gopesh in the quarry. The family pleaded to be taken away from the quarry as they were treated like bonded labourers.
However, the quarry owner Sudhakar Shetty has blamed Kammappa for having fled with Rs 1, 45,000 which the latter took assuring to fetch workers for the quarry.
