Pakistan releases 151 Indian fishermen, Sri Lanka to follow

Karachi/Colombo, May 25 (PTI): In a goodwill gesture, Pakistan today freed 151 Indian fishermen while Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa ordered the release of all detained Indian fishermen on the eve of the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi.

Authorities released 59 Indian fishermen from Malir jail in Karachi and another 92 from Nara jail in Hyderabad in Sindh province.

The release comes ahead of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's visit to India to attend the swearing-in of Modi.

Syed Nazir Hussain, the superintendent of the Malir jail in Karachi, told PTI that the Indian prisoners were released on written directives of the interior and foreign ministries.

"Most of these prisoners are poor Indian fishermen who were arrested and brought here for trespassing into Pakistani territorial waters," he said.

The freed prisoners were taken in an air-conditioned bus from Karachi to Wagah border in Lahore from where they will be handed over to Indian authorities.

Meanwhile, a Sri Lankan presidential spokesman said Rajapaksa has ordered the release of all Indian fishermen ahead of his visit to India tomorrow.

However, Sri Lankan fisheries ministry officials could not indicate the number of Indian fishermen currently in detention.

Pakistan had released around 337 Indian prisoners from jails in August last year. Later on Diwali also, 15 Indian fishermen were released as a goodwill gesture.

Pakistan maritime security forces frequently arrest Indian fishermen and seize their boats for fishing in its territorial waters.

Sri Lankan Navy also arrest Indian fishermen for alleged poaching in Lankan waters.

This is the second instance when Sri Lanka is releasing Indian fishermen.

The Tamil Nadu government had been demanding the release of all Indian fishermen before bilateral talks to resolve the fishermen issue could resume.

Sri Lanka had seized over 160 fishermen despite the agreements reached at talks held in Chennai in January.

The bilateral talks began in mid January to find a solution to the fishermen issue that often boils into a major political controversy in India.

sounds so great. That's clear evident that you take a step ahead, opponent will take 2. Good that Modi didn't listen to anybody on these invitation issue and stuck to his decision. here is the result. I am sure, we will hear many more such good events in coming years. Nobody wants hatred and war. It's only we
( including both pak and india ) were building such scenarios. Nothing was done by the previous Congi Govt till date. But they were smart enough to show that they were kind for minority, but playing complete political game with that single remark. now it's evident. hope we the neigh bouring countried will come close and solve all our problems. really a gift for all indians on this Modi's swearing-in ceremony today.

It’s so happens that sometimes our poor fishermen without proper instrument on their vessel to know the Indian or International Territorial Water enters the Pakistani territory unintentionally caught by Paki Navy or Paki Coast Guards languish in PAK Jail. But due to no diplomatic good relation with India, these poor fishermen suffer for long time. This time, Pakistan did shown their goodwill gesture to release them without any precondition and now its India’s reaction to be seen soon

Pak provoked by firing in the border, killed one Jawan and injuring others.
In Afghanistan, terrorists provoked by firing our Embassy which was countered by their Govt.
But India Govt. did not retaliate, instead invited them (SAARC Country Member PAK) to attend swearing in ceremony of Modi & team.
Therefore, PAK & LANKA reciprocated and released our imprisoned fishermen. FACTS!

By releasing these harmless fishermen Pak has lowered the burden on it's exchequer. If you are really concerned about bilateral relations, go ahead and hand over the D company's chairman. That would be a real feather in the cap of new PM.
