Sullia, Jul 8: A mahout was trampled to death by an elephant at Mittur of Ubaradka near here on Friday July 7.

The deceased has been identified as Somanathan (45) of Kerala.  He was the mahout of this particular elephant which was brought from Cochin in Kerala.  The elephant was summoned from Cochin to pull trees in one Mohan Bhat's plantations at Ubaradka.

On Friday as the said mahout was controlling the elephant as it was pulling the trees, it suddenly knocked him down and trampled.  Before he could recover, the elephant threw him away with its trunk.

As a result, he sustained serious injuries.  Though he was immediately taken to the hospital.  But he succumbed to the injuries on the way.

Meanwhile another mahout succeeded in bringing the elephant under control.  Later a case was filed in the Sullia forest department.
