Libyan warplanes bomb militias in Benghazi

Benghazi, May 29 (IANS): Warplanes belonging to Libya's "coup" general Khalifa Haftar Wednesday launched an air strike on Jihadist militia bases in Benghazi city, military officials said.

Two fighters bombed the February 17 Brigade militia compound and the Ansar al-Sharia militant base in Libya's second largest city Benghazi, witnesses said. The two militia groups under attack did not disclose their casualties and damages.

The attacks came weeks after Haftar and his allied armed forces launched "Operation Dignity" to "purge terrorists."

Haftar, who played a major role in toppling Libya's former leader Muammar Gaddafi, is now waging a war on Benghazi and the interim parliament, trying to force the parliament to abandon power.

He claimed that his manoeuvers were to purge "terrorists" from the authorities, but his actions have been condemned as a "coup" by the parliament.
