Libya's renegade general forces launch air strikes

Benghazi (Libya), June 2 (IANS): Warplanes belonging to the renegade general Khalifa Haftar launched Sunday three air strikes targeting military bases in Libya's Benghazi city, a military spokesperson said.

The jets bombed three goals including local militias and regular army bases damaging some civilian facilities, Xinhua quoted the spokesperson for a militia group "Chamber of Libya" Ahmad Jazawi as saying.

The jets were targeting camps of the February 17 Brigade and the headquarters of the National Army 204 Tank Battalion in the western area of the city, while the historic Crown Palace was also bombed.

Haftar's manoeuvers have been condemned by the Libyan parliament as a "coup", but he has gained more allies recently as some political parties, army officials and armed groups showed their support for him.
