US assures closer ties with Myanmar


Yangon, June 6 (IANS): US Department of Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker Friday reaffirmed the US's commitment to closer economic and commercial ties with Myanmar.

During the two-day Myanmar visit, Pritzker met the country's top political leaders, including President U Thein Sein and Vice President Nyan Tun and discussed the US's commitment to economic engagement in the Asia-Pacific region, deepening responsible US investment in Myanmar, and supporting continued reform, Xinhua reported. 

She also met with Chair of the Lower House's Rule of Law and Tranquillity Committee Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, civil society leaders, and executives from leading US companies investing in the country.

Pritzker revealed that as of the end of April, US companies have planned to invest $243.6 million in Myanmar.

To promote new investment, Pritzker announced the opening of the first-ever US foreign commercial service office in Yangon.
