Driver charged in Tracy Morgan accident case

New Jersey, June 8 (IANS): US comedian Tracy Morgan is in intensive care following a car crash and the driver Kevin Roper, who caused it, has been charged with death by auto, and four counts of assault by auto.

A person is guilty of assault by auto (or vessel) when the person drives a vehicle (or vessel) recklessly and causes serious bodily injury to another.

Roper faces one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto after the crash, which saw the Walmart truck he was driving plough into "30 Rock" star's limo bus, overturning it, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

Five other people were inside the truck with Morgan and six vehicles in total were involved in the crash, on the New Jersey Turnpike June 7.

The 45-year-old was airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center in New Brunswick and is in critical condition, alongside his friend and travelling partner Ardie Fuqua.

Another passenger, James McNair, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Walmart CEO Bill Simon has said the company will pay the expenses of the victims of the crash if its driver is found to be at fault.

"This is a tragedy and we are profoundly sorry that one of our trucks was involved. We can't change what happened, but we will do what's right for the family of the victim and the survivors in the days and weeks ahead," he said.
