Mumbai, Jun 8 (Mumbai Mirror) : Mistaking two youths for thieves, two Chembur residents assaulted them so brutally that one of them died while the other is fighting for his life in the hospital. One of the accused has been arrested.
The incident took place in the early hours of Thursday at the Vashi Naka area of Chembur. Imran Shaikh (20) and his friend Yogesh Singh were walking in the area when the accused, Pramod Singh, and another person attacked them with bamboo sticks. Reportedly, they kept beating the two till they fell unconscious.
Some passersby informed the RCF police, and Shaikh and Singh were rushed to the hospital, where Shaikh was declared dead on arrival. Singh has been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Rajawadi hospital.
A case of murder and attempt to murder has been registered against the two accused, who went absconding after the incident. A manhunt was launched and on Friday evening, the cops received a tip off that Pramod was going to visit his residence. A trap was laid and Pramod was nabbed.
"During the initial interrogation, Pramod said he was home when he felt somebody trying to break into his house. When he stepped out, he saw Shaikh and his friend trying to flee. He and a friend then chased the two and started assaulting them," said a senior police officer from RCF police station.
Singh has been remanded to police custody till Monday, while his accomplice has fled to his native place in Bihar. A team of RCF police will leave for Bihar this week.
Cops will also record Singh's statement when he recovers.
Meanwhile, Sahikh's family alleged that Pramod and his accomplice killed him because of past enmity and they had attempted to do so earlier as well.
