24 Engineering students from Hyderabad feared washed away in Manali

Manali, Jun 9 (Daily Mail / PTI) : At least 24 engineering students are feared to have been washed away this evening in River Beas near Thalot on Manali-Kiratpur Highway, 40km from Mandi, police said on Sunday.

The sightseeing trip to Himachal Pradesh turned tragic for the Hyderabad students, who were taking photographs on the bank of the river.

The gushing waters of the Beas swept them away after water was suddenly released from the reservoir of 126 MW Larji hydropower project.

The incident took place around 7pm near Thalot, 61km from Mandi, when the students from the Hyderabad-based engineering college VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering & Technology, Bachupally, Nizampet, were trying to click photos on the bank of the river.

The students drowned when water from Larji dam was suddenly released without any warning.

Rescue operation

As the tunnel joins the river Beas, the students were thrown into the middle of the river. While some managed to reach the bank, others were swept away. Some students were drowned while trying to save others, police said.

"Exact number of students who were swept away is not known as the rescue operation is still on. They were trying to click the photos near the Larji dam tunnel when the dam staff suddenly released the water from the dam located on other side of the tunnel. The students were unaware of the water threat.

"The flow of the water was so strong that they did not get a chance to reach the bank. While some were washed away and were thrown into river Beas, some even tried to save themselves by climbing on rocks. They were drowned as the water force increased. Some were saved by locals by throwing ropes," Kuldeep Rana, Additional SP, Mandi, said.

Another police official said that when the water was being released the locals also raised the alarm, but the dam staff ignored this. No warning was issued before releasing the water.

According to the police, there were 61 people, including students and staff, on their way to Manali in two college buses. There were 13 female students among them.

Local administration swung into action after the police were called by the locals.

The darkness hampered the rescue operation, which continued till late at night.

People living along the two sides of the river bank downstream of the dam have been alerted to inform the police about relevant sightings.

Massive search operations have been launched to trace the missing students, but there was no success due to darkness.

The incident came as a terrible shock to the parents and friends of the missing students, who are still making frantic calls to know about their whereabouts.

This is the second major accident in the state in less than three months. Nearly two months ago, 15 people were killed and nearly two dozen injured when their overloaded mini-bus rolled down a 400-feet deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district.

The bus was on its way from Milla village to Paonta Sahib.

In another accident in 2013, all 21 people travelling by a private mini-bus were killed when the vehicle skidded off the road and rolled down more than a 500-foot deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district.

Very tragic news to read and no warning was given about the release of water was totally an irresponsible act, thus endangering innocent human lives.

While traveling through the interior of Mexico, I saw several accidents and they were all caused by the lack of warning signs at the road construction sights. In India too, giving prior warning signals is very rare because the human lives are not very important.

Heartfelt condolence to the bereaved families.

Advice to all people who conduct or go to tour:
1). Please check up the details of area where you go sufficiently in advance.
2). What are the threats & risks in the visiting place is important. Knowledge of it will help in precautions.
3). All of the tourists should not directly go for enjoyment. At least few people should be observing any potential risks or at least others. Most of time once in spot, all will be in enjoying mood.
4). Keep information of some emergency contacts for any assistance or if needed like proper medical aid.
5). More than above, please keep in mind that your people in home will be waiting for you. So, Safety first Enjoyment next.

Some areas are very risk as Sea shores of Someshwara-Panambur-Thannirbhavi, Various Temple ponds, River beds, Steep edges in Hills as in Kodaikanal, Nandi Hills, Gadhaikallu, etc.. Places as below Dams, Water swirls in Rivers, etc...Water falls as Silver Cascade Falls (Kodaikanal), Abbi Falls (Coorg), Jog Falls, etc...

It is a very tragic and unfortunate incident which sniffed away the lives of so many innocent young students in one go, and perhaps could be one of a kind!!

There are conflicting reports regarding the warning signal having been given but not heard by the victims in other news reports!!

It is always dangerous to go near large water bodies especially during the rainy season due to sudden changes of weather, lack of safety measures, and the sudden possibility of wash out due to flash floods or a monster wave lashing and washing away the victims!!

Pray that the next of kin get the tremendous courage to surmount this irreparable losses, and the innocent victims souls RIP!!

    It is a sad event.
At least there should have been an interlocking system which sounds alarm 15 minutes prior to release of water. In this modern day technology this will cost few thousands. Why we Indians are not concerned about safety of our fellow beings?. Lack of accountability in Indian system makes people ignorant.
The concerned authorities shall be booked for such crimes.
My sympathy with the family of lost ones.

This is indeed a rare tragedy. From what is said in the media it occurs to any member of the public that water was released from the dam without any warning. This is a careless act on the part of the management of the reservoir.

Lives are lost but some compensation should be made to the members of the families of the deceased. Hope local government will look into this aspect and ensure that justice is done to the ailing relatives of the victims.

Whenever there is a tragic incident, there is an immediate outrage from the general public followed by demands for justice. This continues for about 3 days. There after it remains forgotten until the next incident occurs. Unfortunately we Indians have started accepting this as part of life. After the Delhi rape case, strict laws were promised. Why then, are rapes still occurring? If rape laws are strengthened, most of our ministers and their sons would be behind bars.

Case of negligence ! It should be converted as a homicide case. Lack of accountability is the cause of all such tragedies. In London, a foot path interlock tile came up and down fell an old woman. Immediately corporation staff came and begged forgiveness. Here the govt criminals have no conscience.

Great tragedy. What a loss to those parents whose sons / daughters are killed in this. The Government should take measures to have some of these places under some kind of vigil either by deploying security or delegating it to the local offices to ensure safety of people who come from various places.
I pray that God would give comfort to those bereaved families who lost their dear ones. Let's pray that some of these students and staff who are washed away are safe somewhere and that this incident would give a lesson to all those who dare to risk their lives (into deep water at such late evenings) while each one who want to go to different places to worship / see God realise that God is near to those who earnestly seek Him and know him.

Many of the Tourism spots and the Pilgrim places all over India are danger zones for the tourists and pilgrims. It is high time for the officials to take safety measures - so the imminent tragedies could avoided!
