Mangalore, Jul 15: The DK district principal and sessions court has sentenced Abdul Hameed (33) of Kudroli here for murdering his wife and dumping the body in a jute bag near the national highway on the outskirts of the city a year ago. The charges also included destruction of evidence.

Iqbal of Bajpe and Damodar Achary of Bilinele in Puttur, who had been accused of being Abdul Hameed's accomplices by helping him in dumping the body, have been acquitted by the court.

Sajida was reportedly his fifth wife, while he had already married four girls hailing from Kumble, Bajal, Ullal and Kudroli.

It was accused in the chargesheet that Abdul Hameed had strangled his wife Sajida (30), hailing from Katipalla, with a nylon rope on the afternoon of June 9, 2005. The crime was committed in his rented house at Raikatte in Kulur. After keeping the body for a day at home, he packed it with a pillow and mat. On June 10, 2005 he transported it in the tempo vehicle belonging to Damodar Achary and dumped it in a grass-filled, deserted area by the side of the national highway 17 in Kulur.

The body was spotted in a decomposed state by passers-by on June 13. The district crime investigation bureau (DCIB) investigated the case and on June 24, 2005 arrested three persons in this connectio.

Circle inspector Kodandaram of Panambur had submitted the charge-sheet. The case came up for final hearing on Friday and sessions judge H M Bharatesh sentenced the main accused to life imprisonment, while acquitting the other two.
