Balochistan minority leader shot dead by guard

Islamabad, June 14 (IANS): A minority member of Pakistan's Balochistan assembly was shot dead by his own guard in provincial capital Quetta Saturday, a media report said.

Balochistan government spokesperson Jan Muhammad Buledi told Dawnonline that Handery Masieh's security guard opened fire at him outside his residence in Nawan Killi near Quetta in south-western Pakistan leading to severe injuries.

"Masieh succumbed to his injuries in the hospital," the report quoted Buledi as saying.

Handery Masieh was elected on a National Party (NP) ticket as a minority member to the Balochistan assembly. The National Party is part of the coalition that rules the province.

He belonged to Balochistan’s Mastung district and was an active leader of the ruling NP, the report said.

"The same guard was serving Masieh for the past 15 years," Rehmat Baloch, the provincial health minister and central leader of NP, said.

The motive behind the killing is yet to be ascertained.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif strongly condemned the incident and directed the Balochistan government to bring the assailant to book.
