11 killed in Afghanistan blast

Kabul, June 15 (IANS): At least 11 people, including 10 election workers, were killed in a roadside blast in Afghanistan's Samangan province, police said Sunday.

"Ten election workers, including four women, and a child were killed following a roadside blast in outskirts of provincial capital Aybak city Saturday night," Akram Bigzad, provincial police chief told Xinhua.

He said the victims were travelling in a bus from a polling centre when the incident took place in the province, 215 km from here.

On Saturday, voters cast their ballots in the presidential run off, which marks the first-ever transfer of power from one elected leader to another in the country's history.

Voters were choosing between Abdullah Abdullah and ex-World Bank economist Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai to succeed President Hamid Karzai.
