India has told Dhaka of murder suspect's arrest: minister


Dhaka, June 18 (IANS): India has officially informed Bangladesh about the arrest of Nur Hossain, the prime suspect in the Narayanganj multiple-murder case, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Bangladesh's minister of state for home, said Wednesday.

"They (India) have given us the information in a note verbale," bdnews24.com quoted Kamal as telling reporters.

Nur was arrested with two accomplices from an apartment in Kolkata Saturday.

A councillor in Bangladesh's Narayanganj and prime accused in seven murders case, Nur has been booked under the Arms Act and Foreigners Registration Act for illegal trespass into Indian territory without valid travel documents and for illegal possession of a weapon.

He was presented before the district court in Barasat by West Bengal Police Sunday and sent in police remand for eight days.

The state minister said New Delhi sought more information about Nur and the government was collecting the information.

The Bengladesh government was continuing efforts to bring back Nur Hossain, he said.

On Tuesday, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam said Bangladesh was awaiting an official response from India about Nur Hossain's arrest and the extradition process involved.
