Afghanistan assures cooperation during military operation: Pakistan

Islamabad, June 19 (IANS): Pakistan Thursday said Afghanistan has assured cooperation in boosting security along the border and frustrating attempts by militants to enter Afghan territory during the military offensive in North Waziristan.

Pakistan and Afghanistan have nearly 2,500 km of common border and both countries routinely accuse each other of loose control as the militants cross the border for attacks.

The Pakistani military said it has requested the Afghan National Army and the Afghan Border Police to seal the border on their side to facilitate elimination of terrorists who attempt to escape across the border.

They have also been requested to initiate immediate measures to eliminate Pakistani Taliban terrorists and their sanctuaries in eastern Kunar, Nuristan and other areas of Afghanistan.

When asked about contacts made with the Afghan authorities to beef up security at the border to stop movement of terrorists, Xinhua cited Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said Afghan officials have assured their full cooperation in this regard.

"There is a need for better border management and parallel steps on the other side so that no terrorist could escape into Afghanistan," the spokesperson said.
