Pentagon plans to send Special Forces to Iraq: Report

Washington, June 19 (IANS): The US Defence Department is planning to send Special Forces to Iraq which is witnessing a massive renewal of violence, media reported Thursday.

Intelligence gathering will be one of the major missions if the forces are deployed there, Xinhua reported citing CNN.

The security deterioration in Iraq started June 10 when bloody clashes broke out between the Iraqi security forces and hundreds of Sunni militants who took control of Mosul and later seized swathes of northern territories after the Iraqi security forces withdrew from their posts in Nineveh and other predominantly Sunni provinces.
