CPI-M welcomes vice chancellor's exit

New Delhi, June 24 (IANS): The CPI-M Tuesday welcomed the resignation of Delhi University Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh over the controversial four-year undergraduate course.

The party congratulated "the teachers, students and employees of the university whose sustained and successful struggle has forced the rollback of the utterly arbitrary imposition of the FYUP (Four Year University Programme)".

The CPI-M said it was essential for the University Grants Commission and the university faculties to ensure that the interests of the students "who were forced to enroll in the programme last year are protected".

The admission process for the current year should not be delayed in any way, it said in a statement.

"The CPI-M reiterates its commitment to the autonomy of universities, including Delhi University.

"The healthy functioning of an institution is critically dependent on democratization of decision making processes and regular dialogue with elected teacher and student representatives which was grossly violated by the self-serving actions of outgoing vice chancellor."
