Tamil Nadu frames guidelines for hostels

Chennai, June 26 (IANS): The Tamil Nadu government Thursday issued guidelines for the running of hostels for girls and young and working women like installation of closed circuit cameras, hiring of full-time security wardens, and registration with the collectorate, among others.

In a statement here, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa said the government has come out with the guidelines following the sexual assault of two girl students in a hostel in the state's Pollachi.

As per the guidelines, hostels should be operated in proper building with necessary sanctions and have good infrastructural facilities.

There should be separate hostels for boys and girls and, if for some reason, separate buildings are not available, then boys and girls should be housed in separate rooms.

Only women should be appointed as warden for hostels for young girls and women.

For those who are to be appointed as hostel warden and security personnel, prior police clearance has to be obtained. They should also undergo medical and psychological tests, the guidelines stipulate.
