10 killed in Delhi building collapse

New Delhi, Jun 29 (DHNS): Ten people, including five children and three women, were killed while two were injured when a four-storeyed building collapsed in north Delhi's Inderlok on Saturday.

A distress call was made from Tulsi Nagar, an unauthorised colony, around 9 am, after which officials from the Delhi Police, the Delhi Fire Services, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority rushed to the spot for rescue operations.

“The victims were taken to Hindu Rao Hospital and Acharya Shree Bhikshu Hospital, where four were declared brought dead and six later succumbed to injuries,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma.

Abdul Rashid and Mohammad Naeem, who lived on the top two floors of the almost-50-year-old building, were injured but survived. Both, however, lost all members of their families. Abdul lost his wife and three children. Naeem’s wife, son and daughter were also killed.

The other victims are three cousins who were living on rent on the second floor. Two others living in the building were not present at the time of the collapse, and hence survived.

Investigating authorities suspect that construction at an adjoining plot could have led to weakening of the building.

The narrow by-lanes of the area hampered the arrival of fire tenders and cranes at the spot. “Apart from the pathways being narrow, there was debris everywhere, which restricted movement,” said a fire officer.

A case has been registered over Abdul’s statement with Sarai Rohilla police station against Javed, the owner of the empty plot, and a contractor.

Meanwhile, the state government has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for each of the deceased and an ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 for the injured.

In India, human value is based on their job or wealth else the value of human being is like a trash. That is the main problem.
Something I admire about the U.S. the most is their regard for human life. I have called 911 when I saw some totally helpless stranded people laying down on the roadside, within minutes the ambulance came to pick them up to take them to the hospital. Whether they can pay the bills or not is not a question there, whether they are legal or illegal is not a question then and there.

Even the newly constructed buildings are falling down in India. Who will impose strict guidelines in building construction? Even the guidelines can be so easily overtaken through kick backs.

Finally, the ordinary people, especially the poorest of the society are suffering. Very sad and tragic situation?

why is the Indian engineers ..builders so poor in quality..?
not only the buildings even the engines .machines are so crude..rough?
why , is it because there is already market.you know how AMBASSADOR cars died? ford.gm cars died in America for same reason...no innovation..no research..no passion..all easy going since there was a steady market till such time the Japanese technology REVOLUTIONIZED THE entire spectrum ,,then they opened their eyes and had to run for technology..
this will follow even in construction sector..
Entire BOMBAY city has more then 85% old more than 100years building now dilapidated and written off..
why cant the state govt with the masses the poeple together form a co-operative cos with no middlemen..and start building newere cities on outskirts in clusters and sub divisions and then connect main land Bombay which then should be revamped street by street like Modern Singapore..
    Japanese/Germans /Americans /Britishers/ can help us.. achieve this .
build most modern india of teh future.at least 250 years planning..Broad roads..3 tier roads...
bridge s..tunnels .under sea channels..bullet trains.
educate the people how to use..maintain it..
    clean and smart. ..
Indian engineers should change their strategies.. build only the best ..use the best building materials ..chemicals..machines and work on Practical designs..
    Seek help from abroad.
Builders should follow most strict building codes and specifications..and the CITY/MUNICIPAL engineers should comply with all regulations..
in the interest of the nation and its people...like himself..
