Mother of three drives auto to run family

Pune, Jul 1 (Mid-day) : In 2002, Vaishali Raskar stormed a male bastion when she decided to start driving an auto rickshaw, in order to meet the financial needs of her family.

Now, 12 years later, she runs a tours and travels business with her husband and has managed to take care of her family. However, life had not always been easy for Vaishali, who had to leave her three kids at home to earn money.

“Back then, my husband was driving a school bus, but his earnings were not enough for the family, so I decided to offer a helping hand,” said Vaishali, who in 2002 started taking school children in her auto.

The mother of three admits that it was not easy for her to work in a male-dominated field, as she faced a lot of opposition from her in-laws.

“However, my husband not only supported me, he also taught me how to drive,” said Vaishali, whose career decision was also initially opposed by her eldest daughter, Shrutika.

“I used to feel awkward, and didn’t even share with my friends that my mother drove an auto. However, when they found out, instead of teasing me about it, they appreciated her courage for taking up the job. Most of my friends consider her a role model,” said Shrutika, who is currently pursuing first year BSc from a reputed college of the city.

Aside from the initial resistance from her family, Vaishali says she never experienced discrimination in her field. “It could be because my driving was limited to carrying school children. Whenever I had any difficulty, my male colleagues were always there to help me,” she said.

With the help of her husband, Vaishali started a tours and travels company in 2010 that provides buses and autos to schools in Pune. "While we have drivers, I still prefer driving an auto; it has become my passion," said Vaishali.

All the best and Good Luck to this woman. She had the courage and determination to support her family and give a better life to her kids. It is far better than sending the children out to work at a young age.

Hats off to this woman. It reminds me of my/our childhood where mother was the main bread winner. In many Family when man dies or spoil the Money with drinking or playing mutka or never appears back home then mothers or Girls take up the Job of earning to help.In this case at least her husband supported her,but in -laws were against may be because of old belief that man earns, wife look after home and children.she really had guts to do something for Family.bold woman.she is a model for others.

    hans,Udupi,
I salute this lady! What do you think the solution was? Take 3 kids and commit suicide as we always get to read here? She is a role model for not only her children but to all women just for stepping up with courage and follow her passion in spite of all backward thinking of the society. She is doing decent job and is safer as she is only transporting kids. There is no chance of any indecent people taking advantage of her. Just because she has 3 kids and she is driving auto does not have to compare India and Somalia. Hard working people are the ones who will boost the country. And taking up the jobs like this will encourage others to stand for themselves fighting all discrimination. India is a great country but the society and backward thinking has crushed people`s dreams and does not let them come out of shell!

Hans, why should it be a problem to you ? She is earning her own living to support her family, of which, we should all be proud of.
Be more positive and appreciative ...

How can a lady who has 3 kids be a role model to anybody in modern India? If people start following her our country's population would cross 200 crore and become another Somalia!

    Hi Hans,Udupi

She is a better role-model than probably me and you.

The issue was not the number of her children - please note.

Really? If the lady had just 1kid there wouldn't have been any need for her to ride the auto at all. It was the large number of her children which left her with no choice but to drive an auto.

    @Veena
As a concerned citizen of India I have a problem with high unemployment, sky high inflation, pollution, depletion of all existing natural resources, over crowding, high crime rate, deteriorating economic situation and even the lack of basic facilities for the existing population. One of the main reasons for all this is our ever increasing population. As such I cannot accept a mother of 3 as a role model for our nation. I don't want my Country to become another Somalia.

not sure why so many disagrees to Bhandu mam. He is correcting Nishar that it is not roll model but it should be role model (spell mistake). He said it in his poem style.
