NSA snooping row: India summons top US diplomat

New Delhi, Jul 2 (PTI): Reacting strongly to reports of BJP being spied upon by US National Security Agency (NSA), India today summoned a top US diplomat here to raise the issue, saying it was "totally unacceptable" that an Indian organisation or Indian individual's privacy was transgressed upon.

India also sought an assurance from the US that it will not happen again. However, officials did not say who was the US diplomat summoned by the External Affairs Ministry.

Significantly, the US currently has an interim ambassador Kathleen Stephens who came in after former US Ambassador Nancy Powell resigned from her post.

India also noted that it had raised the issue with the US administration in Washington and the Embassy here in July and November last year when reports emerged that NSA had spied upon individuals and entities and said it was still "awaiting a response from American on this".

India had reacted sharply when the reports of snooping by NSA came to light after revelations by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden last year.

BJP figures in the list of foreign political parties along with Lebanon's Amal, Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood and the Pakistan Peoples Party on whom the National Security Agency (NSA) was given permission to carry out surveillance, says the document made public on Monday by 'The Washington Post'.

The document lists the 193 foreign governments as well as foreign factions and other entities that were part of a 2010 certification approved by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. The list includes India.

"These are the entities about which the NSA may conduct surveillance for the purpose of gathering foreign intelligence," the paper had said, citing documents provided to it by Snowden.

In this world, might is right. Whether right or wrong, as long as one cannot do anything more than expressing unacceptability, America will not stop to do anything it finds appropriate. Calling a diplomat and raising an issue is just a routine thing. Diplomats are specialists in diplomacy. They will say yes and act according to their masters. If you press for an answer, instances are there where ambassadors have said that they are not standing in a court of law to answer straightaway. They say they will enquire with their Govt and answer in due course, which means when their Govt pleases to answer and mostly, if at all. Hope, Modi takes up the matter more seriously than this routine thing.

These shameful acts by external parties is a result of our own Sickular party's attitude towards non-congress parties! External agencies got encouraged by very acts of congress, such as lobbying at US & European nations for not to issue the visa for Modi & consistent effort to malign & tarnish the image of non-congress parties etc., Shame on them!

Indira did snooping on her own DIL maneka, and also Gyani zail singh... and rest of the leaders like Babu jagajivan ram and his son! ...Ramakrishna hegde did that too and many leaders continue to do it!!... but American has no business doing it for the rest... if america monitors its citizens mails and online activity its OK!!..but if it singles out parties from rest of the world, it is an attack on sovereignity of the nation! do you understand that basic difference?!! Bhai mere, muslim resturants just stopped selling Pepsi/Coke at the peak of 9/11 !! and today u all support snooping by big brother? sad yaar! thats how Iraq, afghans, saudi have left US to take control of their fate!

Americans are not gonna care if their diplomats are summoned....because they are a world power.

I hate to admit, but they have immense power, technology and might and we wont be able to stop them.

Lastly, they will still continue spying on 5.6 inch chest and his side kicks.
