Onion prices on fire, Modi govt hikes minimum export price again

New Delhi, Jul 2 (PTI) : The PM Narendra Modi government today hiked the minimum export price of onion to USD 500 per tonne to improve the domestic supply and curb prices.

Last month, the minimum export price (MEP) on onion was re-introduced at USD 300 per tonne barely three months after the previous government in March had abolished it. MEP is the rate below which no exports are allowed.
Retail prices of onion have risen to about Rs 25-30 per kg, while the wholesale prices are ruling at Rs 18.50 per kg in the national capital.

The decision to increase the onion MEP was taken on June 30 by an Inter-Ministerial Committee.

"Keeping in view, the rising retail and wholesale prices and delayed monsoon, the Committee unanimously decided to fix the MEP at USD 500 per tonne which translates to Rs 30 per kg with a view to arrest domestic price rise and augment domestic supply," an official statement said.

The committee observed that "the wholesale and retail prices of onion are going up in producing and consuming mandies and despite MEP at USD 300 per tonne, there is no appreciable decline in the exports of onion."

Onion prices have been rising due to speculation amid anticipation of below normal monsoon despite sufficient supply in the country.

The wholesale price of onion at Lasalgoan in Maharashtra -- Asia's largest onion market -- has risen by about 80 per cent during June to Rs 18.50 per kg.

Onion production is estimated to have risen to 192 lakh tonnes during 2013—14 crop year (July—June), from 168 lakh tonne in 2012—13. Exports meanwhile fell to 13.58 lakh tonnes last fiscal from 18.22 lakh tonnes in 2012—13.
The domestic demand during the lean period from June to November is met through stored rabi (winter) and fresh kharif (summer) produce.

They desperately wanted to come to power and that was the dirty strategy of the bjp, now i am amazed to see the silence of Mr. 56 inch chest.

The bottom line is that sanghi led bjpee DOES NOT understand economics...they are good for screaming and protesting.

If they really have to curb shortage and increase supply then they should temporarily BAN exports of potatoes, Onions and other vegetables.

Technically increasing the min export price is to curb export and increase domestic supply which in turn will bring down domestic prices. But practically, it may also happen that, in spite of increasing the min export price, the demand in international market may still grow (due to factors like purchasing power of international buyers, short supply from other countries etc). If that happens the export business may become more lucrative and domestic supply may go down further resulting in further hike in domestic prices! Banning export is also not a good idea as it may affect our balance of payments. All in all it is a tough job for the government.

I think by increasing export price of onion, surely there will be less buyers from outside and less profit for the growers of onion. At the same time the growers will be served with a double edged sword with local market prices also falling. Both ways it will reflect badly on the farmers with middlemen\traders paying them very less price.
How the growers can sustain this loss?
Govt. must control the losses of these growers otherwise they will be forced into other kharif crops which can be stored for longer period. This the Govt. must look into and act upon.
Last year due to unseasonal rains the growers suffered a huge loss. Who is going to make good this loss? (only if politicians are in it they will immediately claim for
    compensation, like areca nut)
Best thing is government take over growing onions and pay farmers a certain fixed amount for their labour and land rent or fix a definite minimum rate to the growers.
Hoarding word is used by Government even when there are not enough onions to hoard only to protect themselves.
If Govt. points out shortage is due to hoarding what is stopping them from taking action against such hoarders and taking over the hoard?
Moreover, onion is not like grains where one can store them for longer period of time (hoard)
In India, unlike other countries, only the farmer is targeted for working hard to meet the need of the people. Just imagine what will happen if he stops producing the items daily needed by people - then same people will have to pay 5 times or more price for imported items. Support the farmers by blaming Govt. for not supporting the farmers.

Grow up dude.. remember Modi's claims and speeches. He wasn't saying people that there will be situation where he cant control price hikes in the beginning months of his governance. So why after he's empowered?
Think logically don't just comment to defend. People are not against Modi as a person but now, this is indeed a cheating what he did. Blaming previous govt and making many more excuses doesn't make sense. People know it and gives mandatory to BJP to change the situation not to know more reasons. What!!! there are no sources in this wealthy country where government can earn without burdening common people?
