OIC condemns church attacks in Nigeria

Jeddah, July 2 (IANS/WAM): Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Iyad Ameen Madani has condemned the killing of at least 56 people and the destruction of churches in Nigeria.

Madani's statement came following recent attacks on at least four villages near Chibok in north eastern Nigeria by people suspected to be members of the extremist group Boko Haram.

The secretary-general, in a statement Monday, expressed his sadness over the continuing acts of violence by the terrorist group, and conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims.

He urged the authorities to step up their efforts to combat the menace, calling on them to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Madani reiterated the position of the OIC denouncing terrorism and extremism in all forms and manifestations and restated the solidarity of the organisation with Nigeria in these trying times.
