Indian nurses freed in Iraq, to reach Kerala Saturday

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 4 (IANS): All 46 Indian women nurses seized by Sunni insurgents in Iraq were freed Friday and will fly to Kerala Saturday morning, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy announced.

The chief minister said in a telephonic interview from New Delhi that he will be in Kochi to receive the nurses Saturday when they return in a special Air India flight.

The nurses, all from Kerala, are safe, official sources said.

Chandy told IANS that the nurses were being taken in a bus from Mosul, which they reached Thursday evening from Tikrit, to Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan.

"An Air India plane will leave Delhi Friday evening to Erbil to fetch them back," the chief minister said.

"There will be one official each from the Kerala and central governments on the plane," he said. "The nurses will board the flight at Erbil and the plane will reach Kochi at 7 a.m. tomorrow."

One nurse in the bus sent an SMS to IANS promising to call soon.

The development triggered a wave of joy in Kerala, where nursing is a major profession and whose nurses serve in hospitals all across India and in many countries.

The family of one of the nurses added that all of them were on their way from Mosul to Erbil, 60 km away.

A group of Keralites and Indian embassy officials from Baghdad were at the border of Kurdistan to receive the nurses, an official source told IANS.

"They have to cross three or four checkposts at the Kurdistan border," the official added. "Our people are there at the final checkpost."

The chief minister, who has been camping in New Delhi since the crisis erupted, said the latest development took place due to the efforts of the Kerala and the central governments.

He had earlier met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and expressed confidence that the nurses would return to Kerala soon.

"A high-level crisis management group under the leadership of Sushma Swaraj has been formed. It will be doing everything to see that the nurses are brought back safely," he said.

Chandy requested the media not to go overboard while reporting the crisis.

The 46 nurses were put on a bus from Tikrit Thursday afternoon by armed militants and driven to Mosul.

Their shifting caused panic, with some reports suggesting that the nurses would be forced by the Sunni insurgents to work in hospitals controlled by them in Mosul, their stronghold.

But the situation changed dramatically Friday morning when the militants, after serving breakfast, allowed them to speak over the telephone to their families in Kerala.

It was the first definitive indication that the nurses were set to taste freedom.

We all know the negotiating skills of BJP after Kandahar episode where their foreign minister accompanied terrorists to be handed over to Taliban. Now all the Nurses were Keralites and Kerala Ministers,Actors, and Businessmen,s efforts coupled with the pressure exerted by Gulf states particularly Saudi resulted in the release of Prisoners. There is no need to give credit to this BJP FEKU government who are loosing confidence day by day.

Relentless efforts of the Chief Minister who had lodged in Delhi to awaken the Central Government from sleeping and honey-mooning had yield results.

Of course the requests and efforts must be through the external affairs ministry and Oommen Chandy is not an external affairs minister.

The whole and sole guide to central government was C.M. Oommen Chandy because of this new naive government.

Diplomatic guidance of Oommen Chandy is commendable.

My prayers to God for their safety return till they unite with their families.

Really - what herculean efforts? Even Chandy is saying its a consolidated effort of both Center and state, you cannot admit it? Looks like you are another one who likes to hide behind the veil of sickularism & can give credits only to Congis.. I would be ashamed to write to such a comment.

i dont know whether to laugh or pity the fellow commentators here for stating that chandy saved iraqi nurses.as a cm of any state they can only pressure central govts in this matter and console the affected families.in this matter badal was the most energetic, as right from the beginning he was in constant touch with govt and even announced he is ready to pay the ransom if demanded.cm's job starts and stops here.successful rescuing of any indians in iraq will solely go to central govt itself whether it is nda or upa.
    thanks.

Yes Yes, Chandy went there and did his Lungi tricks to resuce the Indians. How the Indian Govt is following up this resuce past one week in being reported in all national Media's. These looser frustrated internet kai sevaks are jumping now just because their chandy to whos state the nurses belong to takes up the mike in MOE office to announce the devlopmetns. Congis and their chelas are good at only this type of politics. That's why they are regional party today.

Shameless BJP's. Even you don't have minimum courtesy to admit that it's Chandey's herculian efforts to get back the Nurses safely to India. People have voted you this time and dont forget they are watching your each move. Modi was commenting congress on each given opportunity and now he has realised that it is difficult to govern the nation. There are lott of challenges before Modi and failing to perform will turn BJP to regional party very soon.

His side kick foreign minister - dancer sushma is a waste who has done nothing apart from photo-ops.
