Udupi, Jul 31: Despite promises by almost all concerned and even non-concerned persons, nothing much has been done to prevent sea erosion which has been a curse to people living along the shores in district. It is not the people lack drive to motivate the elected representatives, but it is simply that these representatives do not have will power to take action.
These columns have regularly been carrying news about sea erosion which has been rampart right from the beginning of the monsoon season. Now after a few days, sea has once again turned violent and is on rampage along the Ucchila-Bada shores. The mighty waves lashing the shores have already engulfed several coconut trees in the last 3-4 days.
This time Kamala B Shriyan has been the big loser. More than 15 coconut trees belonging to Kamala near Mahalakshmi Road at Ucchila have been washed out. More than 50 metres of land has been engulfed by the raging sea in this area. A temporary protection wall which had been erected couple of years ago is not to be seen at all owing to sea erosion.
Still 2-3 houses and their land is under the danger of being washed out by the sea if the erosion continues in the same pace. Moreover fisheries road of the area which is the main link for the people with other places is not far away from the sea. Unless some immediate measures are taken, the road too will be the sea within a few days, say the residents.
