Panaji, Apr 2: Despite intermittent pre-monsoon showers, Goa continues to grapple with soaring temperatures as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for the state, forecasting light to very light rainfall over the next two days.

According to the IMD, Panaji recorded a maximum temperature of 34.2°C on Tuesday, with the feel-like temperature peaking at a sweltering 44°C. Mormugao registered a slightly lower maximum of 33.4°C. The minimum temperature across both districts hovered around 26°C, providing little relief from the heat.

Ponda witnessed around 9 mm of light rainfall, while Sanquelim and Panaji recorded 1.8 mm and 1.2 mm, respectively, classified as very light rainfall. Despite the showers, residents reported that the heat remained oppressive, particularly during the afternoon hours.

The IMD has predicted widespread rainfall across Goa on April 2, accompanied by thunderstorms and wind gusts reaching 40-50 kmph at isolated places. Scattered rainfall is also expected on April 3, officials said.

Meteorologists have attributed the ongoing weather conditions to a cyclonic circulation that has shifted from Marathwada to Madhya Maharashtra at an altitude of 0.9 km above mean sea level.

Additionally, a trough extends from south Chhattisgarh to this cyclonic circulation, passing through Vidarbha and Marathwada at the same altitude. Another north-south trough stretches from the cyclonic circulation over Madhya Maharashtra to the Comorin area, crossing Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, according to the IMD.

While the Yellow Alert signals potential relief from the persistent heat, the impact of these scattered showers remains minimal. Locals continue to endure sweltering conditions even as meteorologists keep a close watch on the evolving weather patterns.
