Accra (Ghana), July 8 (IANS): Ghana's Black Stars head coach Kwasi Appiah's extended two-year contract is expected to fetch him a windfall of over $870,000, state-run Daily Graphic newspaper reported.
The new contract was signed before the Black Stars departed for a pre-World Cup training camp in the Netherlands last May, but was ratified after the tournament following a meeting of the executive committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) last week, reports Xinhua.
According to aspects of the deal disclosed by an inside source to the paper, Appiah will be placed on a new monthly salary of $36,500, a significant increase over the $20,000 a month he had been receiving since 2012 when he signed a two-year contract to take charge of the Black Stars.
In addition to the monthly remuneration, Appiah, who was among the lowest paid coaches at the ongoing FIFA 2014 World Cup in Brazil, is expected to take home a signing-on fee of $100,000 as part of the terms of the new contract.
Additionally, the coach will continue to receive twice the amount his players receive as winning bonus, the report said.
The new contract, which runs till summer 2016, comes despite Ghana's poor performance at the World Cup where it garnered only one point from a maximum nine.
Appiah, assistant coach of the Black Stars since 2008, replaced Serbian Goran Stevanovic, whose contract was not renewed in March 2012 after Ghana failed to reach the Africa Cup of Nations final.
