AIIMS top gainer from budget


New Delhi, July 10 (IANS): The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the capital, a premier research and educational institute that also serves over 9,000 patients every day, topped the list of medical institutes that benefited from the union budget announced Thursday.

AIIMS was allocated Rs.1,365 crore in the budget, higher than the Rs.1,355 crore given in 2013-14.

The Delhi-based institute is among the top 10 medical colleges in the world, and caters mostly to underprivileged people that flock to it from all over the country.

Among the seven medical institutes receiving budgetary funds, the Safdarjung Hospital in the heart of Delhi was allocated Rs.451 crore for 2014-15, down from Rs.469 crore allocated in the last budget.

The Vardhaman Mahaveer Medical College, which shares its campus with the Safdarjung Hospital, received Rs.9.5 crore, marginally lesser than Rs.10 crore allocated last fiscal.

The Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) of Chandigarh was allotted Rs.640 crore as against marginally more than the Rs.635 crore in the last fiscal.

The Delhi-based Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital will get Rs.307 crore.
