26,000 security personnel deployed for FIFA final


Rio de Janeiro, July 11 (IANS): About 26,000 armed personnel will be deployed to ensure public safety during the World Cup final at Rio's Maracana stadium Sunday.

The announcement was made after a meeting between government officials and representatives from football governing body FIFA, reported Xinhua.

"We will maintain the standard of excellence for public safety that we have had since the beginning of the World Cup," Brazil's Justice Minister Jose Eduardo Cardozo said.

Brazil has deployed some 100,000 police and 50,000 military troops during the World Cup.

The government says it has invested $800 million to ensure public safety during the event.

The World Cup final between Argentina and Germany will be played Sunday.
