Kuala Lumpur, Aug 5: Four Indian nationals in Malaysia were allegedly assaulted by their employer's son after they complained to the Labour Department over non-payment of wages for five months, news reports said on Saturday.

The Indians, all hailing from Tamil Nadu and working in a restaurant in Lebuh Chulia in Penang, were attacked with an iron pipe and suffered injuries on their faces, arms, and legs, state-run Bernama news agency said.

The four workers and three others sought help at the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) office. They later lodged a police report.

The workers said their employer did not pay monthly wages worth between 1,000 and 1,500 Ringits (over Rs18, 900) since they were employed, Bernama reported.

When the Labour Department ordered the employer to pay up, it angered his son who then assaulted the workers on Friday.

The Indians, aged between 26 and 40 years, had been in Malaysia for five months to work at the restaurant for a period of three years.

There have been several cases of non-payment or underpayment of promised wages to workers.

Appalled by the growing cases of Indian workers being duped by employers and job agents, Minister of State for Defence Rao Inderjit Singh, during his recent Malaysia visit, took up the issue with Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar, who promised to look into the matter.
